The Paradox of Comfort
Have you ever found yourself in a role you can do in your sleep?
In some ways, that feeling is one we all crave. Heck…our brains are wired for routine, stability, comfort, status quo and collecting a paycheck. From the moment someone asked us a toddler, what do you want to be when you grow up? We are deeply committed to finding that “thing”.
Doing enough to get by and survive can happen in seasons, but the long-term effects can lead to burnout, dissatisfaction and apathy. If you are currently experiencing this feeling, or have in the past, know that you are not alone. However, there are small ways to start chipping away at this feeling as you begin to reflect on what is next. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What about my current role makes me lose track of time in a good way?
Is there an opportunity to advocate for more projects that align with my strengths?
Is there someone in a role at your company or outside of your company that you want to learn more about? Can you connect with them for an informational interview?
Can I make inroads for my development outside of working hours?
Starting with intentional questions is the first step to identifying the root of workplace burnout and apathy. Reflecting on your answers and developing a plan for improvement is where the magic happens.
When the discomfort in comfort becomes deafening, how will you respond?
